What is a functional restoration program ?
When pain medications, injections, physical therapy, or orthopedic surgery fail to provide sustained relief from injury and chronic pain, patients often feel stuck and overwhelmed. Activities become severely limited and physical condition deteriorates. Feelings of frustration and helplessness often give rise to strong emotional reactions. A vicious circle of pain, physical deconditioning and stress may spiral down, with patients feeling more and more disabled and misunderstood. All involved are at a loss as to what to do next – patients, family members, physicians, employers, and insurance companies.

Functional restoration programs (FRPs) were developed starting in the 1970’s to provide patients with a way out of this vicious circle of injury, chronic pain, and disability. Programs such as Tennessee Integrative Health have grown in popularity in this country. By working intensively with a highly skilled team of rehabilitation specialists patients learn to find a pathway back to health and ultimately back to work. They learn that healing is possible through active participation in a carefully supervised physical reconditioning program combined with training in how to cope with pain and stress. At TIH the focus is on the well-being of the whole person, not just the pain

TIH includes a 7 week (20 sessions) intensive multidisciplinary injury rehabilitation program where patients attend 4 days per week (M,T, W, TH) from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Participants are enrolled in a small group (1 to 4) of similarly injured individuals, utilizing group dynamics to reinforce healthy behaviors and goals.

The Daily TIH Schedule Includes:

  • Rehabilitation activities for experiential training in injury-specific exercises and activities of daily living

  • Chiropractor supervised physical reconditioning, body mechanics, and postural training

  • Biofeedback

  • Work simulation activities and safe return to work planning

  • Education about chronic pain rehabilitation, behavioral pain coping skills, and stress management

  • Group and individual cognitive behavioral therapy

  • Medication Optimization
